Professional practice and ethics
How we work, the standards we hold ourselves to, and what you can expect from us.
Our commitments
What you can expect from us
Honest advertising
We describe our services and experience accurately. We do not guarantee permit approvals, and we do not claim credentials, awards or experience we cannot document.
Competence
We take on work we are qualified to do, and bring in engineers and specialists where a project needs them.
Confidentiality
We keep client and project information confidential, and we do not use it in our marketing without written permission.
Conflicts of interest
We disclose any conflict of interest that could affect our judgment, and let you decide how to proceed.
Clear fees and agreements
Early-stage fees are published. Larger services are agreed in a written proposal that sets out scope, deliverables and exclusions.
Public safety and responsible sealing
We design with life safety, accessibility and the Ontario Building Code in mind. Drawings that require an architect’s seal are sealed only by an OAA-licensed architect after review, and engineering is sealed only by licensed engineers.
Standards that guide our practice
- The Architects Act (Ontario) and its regulations
- The Ontario Building Code and applicable municipal by-laws
- Accessibility requirements that apply to the project
- Canada’s privacy and anti-spam laws (PIPEDA and CASL)
- The contract practices described in the Canadian Handbook of Practice for Architects
What we do not do
- Promise a permit approval or an approval date
- Seal or sign work we have not reviewed
- Take on work outside our competence without the right specialists
- Use client information or images in marketing without permission
- Present unverified claims as fact
Raising a concern
If you have a concern about our service or conduct, tell us and we will respond promptly and in writing. You may also contact the Ontario Association of Architects, which regulates the practice of architecture in Ontario.
