Notes from the studio
Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need an architect
It may seem odd to read this from an architectural practice. We would still rather you heard it from us.

Some projects are simple
Small, straightforward work, such as a modest deck or a minor interior change, can sometimes be designed by other qualified people, or may not need design drawings at all. The rules depend on the project and on your municipality.
How to find out
- Ask your municipality’s building department what your project needs
- Ask anyone you are considering what qualifications they hold
- Or ask us. We will tell you plainly, even if the answer is “you do not need us”
When an architect helps most
Usually on projects that are more complex, that change how a building works, or where design quality really matters, such as additions, new homes and sites with tricky zoning. Having one team coordinate the design, the approvals and the consultants can save a great deal of worry.
Either way, you are welcome to stay in touch. Ask us a question whenever it helps.
